Scarperia e San Piero ~ 6 July - 13 October 2024

In the picturesque setting of Mugello, the village of Scarperia is ready to host the 50th annual "Exhibition of Sharp Tools", a prominent event dedicated to the art of knives and cutting tools. Since 1974, this event has celebrated the ancient tradition of the master knife-makers of Scarperia, a tradition rooted in the Middle Ages that has made the village one of the most renowned centers for knife production in Italy.

A HERITAGE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CULTURE

The production of knives in Scarperia has a long history, dating back to 1306 when the village was founded by the Florentine Republic. But how did this ancient tradition begin? The strategic position of the village certainly played a key role in the development of this art. Scarperia was built to protect Florence from enemy incursions from northern Italy and, for this reason, was equipped with strong defensive walls and a castle.

Beyond its military function, Scarperia was located along one of the main routes connecting northern and central Italy. This made it a frequent stop for travelers of all kinds, from merchants to pilgrims, who stopped here to rest and shop before continuing their journey. It was in this context that the art of forging knives developed: versatile tools useful for travelers, suitable for eating, self-defense, cutting branches and brush along the Apennine trails, and much more.

Over time, the knife-maker workshops multiplied to the point where almost every family in Scarperia had its own knife-maker. Since then, the knife-makers of Scarperia have refined their techniques, passing down their knowledge from generation to generation. The Exhibition of Sharp Tools is the best celebration of this centuries-old tradition.

A SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION: NOBLE AND PRECIOUS KNIVES

This year, not only is the 50th anniversary of the Exhibition being celebrated, but also the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Museum of Sharp Tools. Founded in 1999 within the Palazzo dei Vicari, it is managed by the Pro Loco Scarperia, which, thanks to the support of the Municipality of Scarperia and San Piero, is always able to carry out ambitious and enriching projects for the museum and its visitors.

The 50th Exhibition of Sharp Tools also marks the renewal of collaboration with one of Florence's most prestigious museums—the Bargello National Museum: works from the Florentine museum finally return to Scarperia after their last exhibition in 1998.

This exhibition is titled "Noble and Precious Knives" because it focuses on fixed-blade knives and noble table cutlery. Although Scarperia's tradition has primarily focused on folding knives and working tools, table knives for wealthier clients have been produced since the 16th century, catering to a different clientele than that of the peasants.

This year's exhibition therefore offers an interesting collection of table cutlery used in noble residences in various countries, such as France, Germany, and England. This allows for the exploration of both the peculiarities of different productions and the spread and use of various types of knives during banquets, where specialized figures such as the Carver and the Scalco were present. Additionally, to celebrate this important 50th year, the Centre for Research and Documentation on Sharp Tool Craftsmanship has curated a video collection of past exhibitions, showcasing the various collaborations that have contributed to its success.

AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED

The 50th Exhibition of Sharp Tools promises to be an unmissable event for knife enthusiasts, as well as for anyone interested in high-quality craftsmanship and Italian culture. Scarperia, with its ancient charm and dedication to the art of knives, becomes the center of the world of sharp tools for the occasion, welcoming visitors from all over Italy and beyond.

The inauguration was held on July 6, 2024, and the knives will be on display until October 13 at Palazzo dei Vicari in Scarperia.
